Bonding hearts through dragon boat camaraderie, steering cultural inheritance toward the world

Forging emotional bonds among compatriots from Guangdong, Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and overseas Chinese communities through dragon boat culture, the spectacular folk gala in Liwan captivated audiences across the globe.

Amid rippling waves and resonant drumbeats, the inaugural “Shuixiu Huaxiang” Liwan Dragon Boat Carnival successfully concluded at the Haizhong Village Dragon Boat Sports Park in Guangzhou’s Liwan District after a three-day run from June 12 to 14. Rooted in profound Lingnan dragon boat heritage, the event followed the principle of inheriting traditions through innovative development. It seamlessly integrated classic dragon boat races, folk cultural exhibitions, youth-oriented performances and cross-regional cultural exchanges. Distinguished guests including compatriots from Guangdong, Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and global overseas Chinese communities attended the grand occasion. Using dragon boats as a cultural bond, the gala brought together compatriots at home and abroad, building a lively platform to showcase the cultural charm of the Greater Bay Area and introduce time-honored Chinese folk traditions to global audiences.

A signature cultural brand carefully built by Liwan District, this inaugural carnival broke away from the single sports competition model, with a comprehensive agenda centered on cultural heritage and innovative cultural development. The opening ceremony unfolded in a solemn yet festive atmosphere, featuring traditional lion dances and time-honored ritual ceremonies that fully embodied the unique appeal of Lingnan folk customs. Dignitaries and guests from all walks of life gathered to share insights on cultural inheritance and regional growth.

Representatives from two teams – the joint dragon boat squad of compatriots from Guangdong, Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and overseas Chinese, and the Greater Bay Area Dragon Boat Team of Jinan University Guangzhou Alumni – took an oath on site. Their resounding vow conveyed the core spirit of unity, collaboration, perseverance and bold competition, marking the official launch of the aquatic races.

The racing segment brimmed with excitement. Multiple teams from Guangdong, Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and global overseas Chinese communities competed side by side on the river. Regardless of their origins, rowers pulled oars in perfect unison, embodying the spirit of "all in the same boat". Cheers from spectators blended with thunderous drumbeats along the river, highlighting the thrills of competitive sports while building a platform for exchanges between compatriots across the Taiwan Strait, Hong Kong, Macao and overseas. Through this gala, friends from all regions deepened mutual understanding and fostered closer bonds, carrying the profound patriotism rooted in shared ancestry along the riverside of the water town.

Around the race venue lay diverse cultural experience zones featuring intangible cultural heritage handicrafts, local specialties and authentic Cantonese cuisine. Visitors could immerse themselves in authentic Lingnan rural customs while watching the races. The lively setting offered a relaxed space for guests to interact, facilitating cultural exchanges and business negotiations, and delivering dual value in culture and social development.

On the closing day of the carnival, single-person dragon boat races took center stage, where athletes displayed remarkable agility and strength on the water.

One major highlight of the event was the appearance of original local cultural IP character Chongniang Xiaoying, who delivered youthful, trendy stage performances. Through modern artistic interpretations of traditional dragon boat culture, these performances bridged the gap between folk customs and young generations, encouraging more young people to carry forward the millennia-old cultural heritage.

Dragon boats carry cultural legacies; united hearts march toward a shared future. The inaugural Shuixiu Huaxiang Liwan Dragon Boat Carnival stands as an in-depth inheritance of Lingnan dragon boat folk traditions and a successful practice of innovative expression for traditional culture. Using dragon boats as a medium, the event strengthened emotional ties linking Guangdong, Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and overseas Chinese, embedding the spirit of unity, perseverance and progress in people’s hearts.

Looking ahead, Liwan District will continue to tap into its local folk cultural resources, strike a balance between heritage and innovation to enrich the connotations and diverse forms of cultural events. The district will further take culture as a bridge to deepen exchanges and cooperation with compatriot groups from Guangdong, Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and overseas Chinese communities. It aims to let dragon boat culture glow ever brighter, drive high-quality regional development with cultural vitality, and share the unique humanistic stories of Lingnan water towns with the whole world.
